Design History

The Hardoy Chair was developed in 1938 under its original name, the BKF Chair – named after the initials of its three designers. As early as 1940, the chair was first presented to the public at the Salon de Artistas Decoradores and quickly evolved into an icon of modern furniture design.

In 1941, the Museum of Modern Art added the chair to its permanent collection. Especially in the 1950s, the Butterfly Chair became a worldwide cult object and was particularly popular among architects, artists, and design lovers. Its exceptional design made it one of the most copied furniture pieces of the 20th century.
