Design History

The Hardoy Chair was developed in 1938 under its original name BKF Chair – named after the initials of its three designers. Already in 1940, the armchair was presented to the public for the first time at the Salon de Artistas Decoradores and quickly developed into an icon of modern furniture design.

As early as 1941, the Museum of Modern Art included the armchair in its permanent collection. Especially in the 1950s, the Butterfly Chair became a cult object worldwide and was particularly popular among architects, artists, and design enthusiasts. Its extraordinary design made it one of the most copied pieces of furniture of the 20th century.
